Nothing screams "My carpet does not match my drapes," like some 4-inch re-growth, but I guess some babes are into advertising that. Ombre hair seems to be fast-growing on the celebrity population. Katie Holmes founded this trend back before she was babymama to a midget sickopath. This is a difficult hair trend to tackle as it does work for some....
although others... not so much...
I have created some rules of ombre. If you decide to try this, I don't want you looking like trailer trash barbie. Unless you already look like trailer trash barbie. In that case, this look won't un-trash you.
1) Do you have a small face?
Rule number one of haircolor- Dark makes things look smaller, light makes things look bigger. Ombre haircolor is keeping your darker, natural(ish) haircolor around your hairline and forehead. The eye is first drawn to the lighter color at then ends and moves upward, making your face the last to be noticed. If your face is small, it will overpower, not enhance your features.
2) Do you have long hair?
Ombre is a very laid-back, bohemian look best suited for long hair. If you have short hair, you can certainly achieve the look with some extensions, which will save your natural hair from all the lighter color.
3) Never do one flat color for the ends.
You don't want an extreme 'line of demarcation'. Foils of different hues are going to give you the softest, most flattering look. It is also a great idea to have just a few foils around or near your face in the darker section as well.
4) Keep the contrast to a minimum.
The most successful ombres are ones with the least contrast. Maybe just a couple shades darker on top.
Steven Tyler could realistically fit my whole face in is mouth, so I'm not going to participate in this up-and-coming color scheme. Hell, I don't even make it past Rule #1. Good luck to those of you that do it. Ombre is FAWESOME on those that do it right!
