Updating Your Hair Regime

Ladies!  Now that straight hair is on its way out, time to revise the ol' morning routine.  Ever see those ladies walking around the grocery store or pumping gas with their 40 year old Farrah flip or their 30 year old pouf-bangs aqua-netted into place?  Old habits die hard.  You don't want to be that girl with the stringy stick-straight hair that the younger girls giggle at.  Here we are doing to dissect your hair and your effort to find a new style for you to try.  Don't worry if it doesn't come natural at first.  Think of how many times you burned your finger, singed your hair, or missed sections with your flat iron 10 years ago.

If your hair is fine or thin:

1)  Shower at night?  Add a little mousse when you get out.  You can let it air dry or blow dry it- completely up to you.  In the morning, spray a little volumizing spray and put your hair in hot rollers.  Make sure the section you roll is no bigger than the roller.  Set while you do your makeup or eat breakfast.  Remove rollers, finger comb and use a light aerosol hairspray to finish.

2) Shower in the morning?  Apply mousse and blow dry in sections.  Wrap sections around Velcro rollers once the section is COMPLETELY dry.  It may seem tedious at first, but your hair actually will DRY FASTER if done in sections like this.  Once all hair is rolled, spray and set for 15 minutes.  Remove rollers and finger comb and spray.

3) Second-day hair day?  Ballerina buns are very trendy right now.  Avoid putting your fine tresses in a ponytail- simply twist and pin.  Let pieces stick out for a more bohemian look, add a headband and there's your perfectly pretty second day hair.

If your hair is medium thickness with some wavy or curly texture:

1) Shower at night?  Apply some gel to your wet hair.  It is a good idea to blow dry the roots smooth, but you can skip blowdrying your whole head.  In the morning, wrap hair around a medium barreled curling iron, like this:
as you can see, she has not clamped the hair into the iron, she has simply wrapped the hair around it.  This is a fast and easy way to style some waves into your hair.  Spray each section before wrapping and then a little bit of serum when your whole head has been 'waved'.

2) Shower in the a.m.?  Apply some gel and dry with a pronged diffuser section by section on LOW setting.  Touch up the top section with a curling iron if necessary and spray.  Add some serum if necessary.

3) Second day hair?  Twist or loosely braid the sides back to a ponytail for a no-fuss style.

If your hair is thick and curly:

1) Shower at night?  Apply a leave in conditioner and a gel and sleep with your hair in a braid to smooth the top sections.  Blow dry your damp hair in the morning in sections and wrap each dried section around a Velcro roller immediately.  Once your head is dry, remove rollers starting with the first one you put in.  Smooth over any fuzz with a curling iron.
2) Shower in the a.m.?  Apply gel when you get out of the shower, towel dry, and dry with a diffuser.  If you are pressed for time, you can get away with only diffusing the top sections of hair.  Spray top section with hairspray, then touch up with a CONICAL WAND.  These wands will sculpt your hair into the most natural looking curl that is smooth if used correctly.  Below I have embedded a tutorial.  Taylor Swift swears by her conical iron, they are the latest and greatest at taming coarse hair while still keeping it natural.

Unfortunately, the girl in the tutorial does NOT have curly hair, so she uses it on her whole head.  You would only need to use it to tame the top sections.  One of these days I am going to learn how to make a video tutorial.  How to style coarse curls will be my fist one :-)  Us nappy girls have the most hair to deal with and the hardest/takes the longest to style!

3)  Second day hair?  A sideways french braid with a pretty pony is a nice alternative to mega-thick ponytails!
